About Fuzztone

Music.  It’s why you stumbled onto this minuscule spot on the world wide web (do they even call it that anymore?). It’s also why we’re here.

I’ve worked in Asheville-based media for the last 3 years and realized that music wasn’t being covered in a satisfactory way.  Instead, it was relegated to friends of editors or to buzzword-filled articles that failed to document why local music matters. Gannett knows just as much about the Asheville-based music scene as the Mountain Xpress and their bevy of fashion and newswriters do, which is to say not much at all.

Let’s face it, print is on it’s way out, or on its way to becoming a niche thing, an antiquated reminder of the past.  While some of us are choosing to bemoan the loss, we here at Fuzztone would much rather look forward to a time when music is covered not because of an editorial mandate on what’s hip at the moment, or what artist at the moment is moving the most units or becoming the most tabloid fodder.

If that style of music writing is what matters to you, then Fuzztone probably won’t be your place of choice for music news, reviews and opinion.

The music in this town is diverse, heartfelt, off-the-cuff and always challenging to the listener, so why shouldn’t the documenting of the music be all of those things?

But the local scene is just a small piece of the puzzle.  If what’s going on in Asheville is valid and influential to others, isn’t the music being made elsewhere just as important to hold up as a mirror? Fuzztone says yes, and that’s why you’ll see reviews of music from all over.

Also, Asheville is in a fortunate position of seeing some of the best music from around the globe come through our town. At Fuzztone, we plan on covering those groups also. They are just as important to what happens here as any local band.

Throughout this journey, we also plan on looking back to Asheville’s past and profiling venues and people who made this town and music scene viable from the beginning. We hope you join us for that.

Fuzztone isn’t a blog. What we are is a living, breathing document of the sounds that matter. The way we choose to do it may rub some the wrong way, but if a devotion to finding and chronicling those moments of musical perfection and harmony are what you are looking for, then buckle up and grow with Fuzztone.

From hip hop to metal to jazz to country, from West Asheville to West Berlin (take the long way around through Hawaii) we plan on having you covered.
